Amazing Animal Stories
by Justin Murdock
On June 1st, 2015, I woke up 6:30 A.M. to get ready for school. It wasn’t just any ordinary day. My class and I were going to go to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary; otherwise known as the CAS. There, we saw many animals like horses, cows, chickens, pigs, sheep, turkeys, goats, and even donkeys! You might think that a sanctuary is a zoo because there were a ton of animals, but they’re two different things. A sanctuary is a place with refuge and safety, and the animals have a better life. One of the chickens named Peabody seemed to love the place. He was excited, jumpy, and hyper. All the animals got free range, and even the goats started to run out of the sanctuary! However, in a zoo, the animals may get a lot of attention, but they don’t have a good life. They may not get enough care, food, or water. It was a huge place and it very well encouraged me to be vegan.
One reason why I loved the CAS is because of the amazing stories of how the animals got saved. Jasmine the pig was almost bacon because the farmer (before she came to the sanctuary) kept feeding and feeding her. She wasn’t “fat” enough so she was thrown out. The farmer’s neighbor took Jasmine and put her in the CAS. Another interesting story was Peabody. He was also going to be a meat product. He was separated from his brothers and sisters, and was eventually saved and brought to the CAS.
Another reason why I loved the CAS is because of the animals. They’re always really energetic and kind, and they’re not aggressive. They seem gleeful and they really stood out to me and resembled a special symbol. I loved them and they loved me. The CAS is definitely better than the zoo.
In conclusion, the CAS was very exciting and enjoyable because of the animals and their stories. I was surprised when I saw these poor animals in horrid conditions and then got saved by the CAS. If my teacher, Mrs. Clyne-Davis, and my classmates weren’t there, I’m sure it wouldn’t be as a good of a trip.
