The Tiger Rising Book Review
By: Alexis Weng
Introducing The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo! In this book, Rob Horton, a boy with great efforts and love stored inside him, meets Sistine Bailey, a girl with a big personality. The 2 children are different and as they get use to each other, make a change in the world. The owner of Rob’s hotel is holding a tiger captive in a cage by the hotel. When Rob and Sistine see the tiger, they go through the conflict of letting go of the tiger or not. They find out each other’s personalities and find and share stories with other people. When they see a tiger held in captive in a cage behind Rob Horton’s hotel, they argue about whether or not to free the tiger or not.
Kate DiCamillo, a National Book Award Finalist is an author who writes books about animal rights and kids caring of animals. She is able to explain the horrid point that many animals are held captive although they are too large to be done so. This theme is portrayed by putting a tiger into the issue to explain and exaggerate the issue to tell others about the issue. I think that this is a great book because it advocates the readers to let them know about captive animals. Not only is it about tigers, but elephants, and other animals are held under captive too

Already, you want to know what happens next right! If you really feel that this book is YOUR type, go and get it! The part that I loved is that you can learn so much from this book. Not only do you learn about captive animals but about changing your perspective, and how real friends are like. The relationship between Sistine and Rob is so different that you can learn a couple of things from their interactions and how they really communicate. They started out as enemies but then were able to work together to solve the problem with the tiger.

In the book, The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo, Rob Horton, who lives in the Kentucky Star Motel. Rob, whose mother just recently passed away from Cancer, has his own problems. On a misty and gloomy day, he was walking through the woods and found an extraordinary surprise! He found a tiger in the cage. What's more is that on the same day, he meets a girl named Sistine Bailey who shows her feelings while Rob just keeps it deep down in his “Suitcase” The Suitcase is where he hides lots of his personal feelings. As Sistine and Rob learn to trust each other, Rob started to tell his feelings and secrets more and more. His “Suitcase” didn’t seem to work anymore.

Rob, who doesn’t really want to help save the tiger in the cage, has a friend named Willie May, who tells him about her bird who was in a cage, but she let it go. She said that her father got mad and the bird probably got eaten by a snake. Because of that, Rob thought that if he let the tiger go it wouldn’t survive. Sistine on the other hand, mostly cared about the tiger. She wanted to free it, so this way it wouldn’t feel trapped. She thought that it wasn’t right for the tiger be trapped in the cage.
One of the main themes in this story is “Kids can make a difference”. I think this because Rob and Sistine are only kids, and they freed the tiger. Yes, there was problems along the way, but with friendship, they solved it all.
I recommend this book to anyone who cares about the environment. This teaches us all a lesson because it really is true. Old or young, change the world the way you can.

The Tiger Rising

Review by Emma Muller
Have you ever been to Florida where the fog was crawling down your throat? Most likely not but, Tiger Rising by Kate Dicamillo sure will take you there. Rob Horton, a young boy who had a rash of sadness on his legs and whose mom had died and had left his old town with his dad trying to forget his mom but, yet packing a suitcase filled with memories and emotions that he would try to never open or let out had moved there. There is a lot in his life at that point and it is hard for him to cope with things. Lets just say his life is very complicated and we are luck to have the things he doesn't. For example, a Mom.

Rob met Sistine an amazing young girl whose parents aren't in a steady relationship. Sistine is a spectacular girl who is not afraid to get her hands dirty and in the process maybe give a few good punches. She was named after a Chapel. Sistine and Rob try to keep a tiger they found in a cage in the back of a motel hidden from the owner who they think will hurt it so they want to set the tiger free.
Tiger Rising was filled with emotion you could see how the character was feeling in your mind. You could feel how lonely and depressed Rob felt without his Mom to be their for him during his bad times. Kate Dicamillo did a great job on showing how to connect through characters using emotions such as sadness or anger. |
Sistine is the reason that I mostly liked this book. She had a fiery heart and was her own person. She had a few setback like complications with her parents and peers but, she got a friend out of Rob and would never be set back. She stuck to Rob and tried her best not to be his enemy but, instead his friend. Sistine was an overall good person. For example, when she saw the tiger being locked up she immediately wanted to set it free.
Kate Dicamillo is a overall great author and I adore her. I loved her book Tiger Rising and I would greatly recommend it.There are so many books in the world but I would sit down to read hers.
